Crete. Crete is by far the largest of the Greek islands and has two airports, Heraklion for central and eastern Crete and Chania for the less developed west. Resorts: The largest resorts can be found on the north coast and to the east of the capital Heraklion. Malia is the main clubbing resort. Hersonissos is the closest resort to Heraklion and offers plenty of nightlife. Stalis is also lively but more traditional. Aghios Nikolaos is probably the prettiest town in Crete with its large lagoon fringed by many bars, restaurants and shops.

Beaches: Crete is famous for its golden sands. Rethymnon is a lovely resort with four miles of sand and plenty of watersports. Malia also offers one of the best beaches on the island as well as being famous for its nightlife.

Sightseeing: Crete has more extensive archaeological remains than any other Greek island. The best-known is the Minoan palace on Knossos, just outside Heraklion.

Shopping: For shopping Heraklion is a must as one of the largest cities in Greece where like Athens, you can shop till you drop. For bargains check out the central market on a Saturday. Chania, the gorgeous capital can be found in the west of the island and is best known for its leather goods and a beautiful harbour. With strong Venetian and Turkish influences it has a large number of traditional restaurants.

Local Customs: Dress modestly when visiting monuments and religious buildings.

Eating Out: All Greek islands are famous for moussaka, greek salad and fried cheese. Baklava is a sticky pastry dessert covered in nuts. Wash it down with some local retsina or Metaxa brandy. If you have a strong stomach try the local raki.
